Focus Group Update

Joanne Southall • October 16, 2024

We are thrilled to announce the completion of the position statement document from the significant research paper titled "Approaches to Supporting Autistic Children and Young People in Cheshire West and Chester." This comprehensive document has been agreed following consultation with various Education and Health staff and parent carers and autistic individuals. It aims to describe acceptable language and what helps autistic children and young people in our schools.

Background and Process

Dr. Kate Hughes recently met with the Parent Carer Forum (PCF) management group to present the initial draft of this paper. The discussion highlighted the need for a refined approach to ensure that the document meets its intended goals:

  • Promote Common Language: The paper supports the use of consistent and respectful terminology regarding autism across Cheshire West and Chester.
  • Framework of Good Practice: It outlines a framework of effective practice, based on information from the Autism Education Trust and Person-Centred Practice.
  • Common Approaches to Intervention: The paper describes the most frequently quoted approaches to intervention, briefly listing advantages and disadvantages as described in the research

The Role of Parents and Carer

The first presentation with the parent carer management group prompted further input from the wider community which led valuable feedback session with a group of parents and carers. This input was crucial in refining the paper to better align with the needs and expectations of the community. The revised draft was then discussed in detail during a focus group meeting, ensuring that the final version accurately reflects the collective insights and recommendations.

Additional Materials

To further support the dissemination of this important document, The PCF prepared a call-to-action letter. This letter emphasises the significance of the paper and will accompany it when sent to professionals in education, health, and social services. The aim is to underscore the importance of the document and encourage its use in practice.

Availability and Access

We are pleased to inform you that the final version of the paper will sit on the LiveWell site. This resource is designed to inform and support parents, carers, young people, and professionals in Cheshire West and Chester. We have requested that an easy read version should be created and will eventually sit alongside side the the paper. We will share this as soon as it’s done. This has been included in the School's Bulletin's next addition.

We like to thank Dr Kate Hughes for her time listening to parents carers, children and young people and autistic individuals throughout the process.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all the parents and carers who contributed their time and feedback. Your involvement has been instrumental in shaping this important document.

Thank you for your ongoing support and dedication to enhancing the lives of autistic children and young people in our community.
